Chapter Three 

The halls of Westbridge High buzzed with excitement. Graduation caps were tossed into the air, laughter and cheers filling the atmosphere. Students hugged, took pictures, and celebrated the end of an era. But amid all the excitement, one moment stood out—James standing in the middle of the crowd, holding a bouquet of fresh red roses.

Zara, dressed in her graduation gown, turned around just in time to see him stepping forward. A soft gasp escaped her lips as James extended the flowers toward her, his signature smirk in place.

“For you, my star girl,” he said.

Zara’s heart swelled. She reached out, taking the bouquet while biting back a smile. “You’re really doing this in front of the whole school?”

James shrugged, unfazed. “Gotta make sure everyone knows the best basketball player of Westbridge High secured himself a future doctor.”

The students erupted in cheers. Some clapped, some whistled, and a few girls swooned at the sight of James being so openly romantic.

“Y’all are too cute, I swear!” someone shouted.

“Westbridge’s finest love story!” another voice chimed in.

Zara shook her head, laughing as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “You’re the best James.”

James grinned, slipping his fingers through hers. “C’mon, I wanna take you somewhere.”

They left the crowd behind and walked toward the quietest part of the school—an old oak tree at the edge of the field. A wooden bench sat beneath its shade, a place that held so many memories for them.

As they sat, Zara ran her fingers along the wood, her voice soft. “I can’t believe we’re actually done with high school.”

James leaned back, stretching his arms behind his head. “Crazy, right? Feels like just yesterday you were the nerdy girl always getting mad at me.”

Zara scoffed. “Excuse you? You were the one always messing with me.”

James smirked. “And you always fell for it.”

She rolled her eyes, but the playful glint in her gaze betrayed her amusement. “You’re lucky I forgave you.”

James sat up, resting his elbows on his knees. “I still remember when you got in trouble and had to spend weeks in the silence room.”

Zara groaned. “Ugh, don’t remind me. That punishment was torture.”

James chuckled. “You know what’s funny, though? Out of all the people in school, I was the only one who checked up on you.”

Zara tilted her head, smiling. “Yeah, you kept sneaking me snacks and ice cream.”

James grinned. “Gotta admit, I had a soft spot for you even back then.”

Zara leaned her head against his shoulder. “I guess that was when I started seeing you differently.”

They sat in comfortable silence, taking in the moment. The past years had been filled with teasing, bickering, and unexpected love. And now, standing on the brink of the future, everything felt surreal.

A voice called out from a distance, breaking the quiet moment.

“James!”

They both turned to see a man waving at him from across the field—his father.

James sighed, shaking his head. “Looks like my old man’s here to drag me home.”

Zara smiled, squeezing his hand. “Go, future basketball star.”

James smirked. “And you, future doctor, don’t forget about me when you’re out there saving lives.”

Zara laughed. “Never.”

James stood, pulling her up with him. He hesitated for a second, then leaned in and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I’ll see you soon.”

She held onto his hand for a moment before letting go. “See you soon, James.”

As he jogged toward his dad, Zara watched him go, her heart full. This was the end of high school, but it was just the beginning of something even greater.
